If you’ve been told it’s time for cataract surgery, you might be hearing a lot of confusing terms. Things like advanced technology IOL, premium cataract surgery, multifocal IOL (MFIOL), and Light-adjustable lens (LAL) can all sound overwhelming. But don’t worry—we’re here to explain it in simple terms.

Let’s start with what really matters: getting your best vision back with a lens that fits your lifestyle and budget. At Clear Vision Center, we believe in cost transparency and helping you find the right option—not the most expensive one. One great option that’s helped many of our patients is the Eyhance advanced lens.

What is Eyhance?

The Eyhance advanced intraocular lens (IOL) is an upgraded lens used in cataract surgery. It’s made by Johnson & Johnson and is part of their Tecnis family of lenses. Eyhance is more forgiving than a basic lens, helping you see clearly far away while giving you a little extra help up close too.

While it’s not a full multifocal lens (MFIOL) or extended depth of focus lens (EDOF), it does help improve your depth of focus through specialized optical properties of the lens. That means you may be able to do more without glasses, especially compared to the basic lens most insurance covers.

And if you have astigmatism, there’s a version of Eyhance called the Eyhance Advanced Toric IOL. This version corrects your astigmatism during cataract surgery, giving you sharper, more focused vision. You may no longer need glasses for driving, watching TV, or other daily tasks.

Why Patients Love Eyhance

Our patients love Eyhance for a few simple reasons:

  • Great distance vision: You can see clearly for driving, watching TV, or enjoying the outdoors.
  • Better mid-range vision: Reading your phone, using a tablet, or cooking becomes easier. Many can see the dashboard of their vehicle.
  • Astigmatism correction: The Eyhance Toric IOL corrects blurry or distorted vision caused by astigmatism.
  • Low rate of glare and halos: Unlike some MFIOLs, Eyhance has fewer night vision side effects, although ANY IOL can cause these symptoms.
  • Affordable upgrade: It costs 30-40% less than other premium lenses, with monthly payment options as low as $116 per eye.

In short, Eyhance hits the sweet spot of offering premium cataract surgery benefits without the premium price tag.

Understanding Your Lens Options

When you need cataract surgery, you’ll have to choose a lens to replaced the cloudy cataract that is being removed. Here’s a quick breakdown:

1. Basic Monofocal IOL

This is what Medicare and most insurance plans cover. It corrects only one distance—usually far away, but won’t correct astigmatism. Most will still require bifocals or progressives after surgery, due to the limitations of the basic lens–especially if you have astigmatism.

2. Eyhance Advanced Monofocal IOL

This is a step up from the basic lens. Eyhance offers improved focus at distance, but it gives you improved vision at arm’s length too. It’s great for people who want more freedom from glasses but don’t want to spend thousands more. If you have astigmatism, the Eyhance Toric IOL can correct that too—right in the same surgery.

3. MFIOL (Multifocal IOL)

These lenses offer both near and far vision correction without glasse. But they can cause more glare, halos, and trouble with contrast at night. They require a period of neuro-adaptation (your brain getting used to the optics of the lens), and is not for everyone. MFIOLs are more expensive than Advanced Monofocal IOLs, but do provide the most range in vision after surgery. For those who are a candidate, they are a great option!

4. Light-Adjustable Lens (LAL)

This is the newest option. After surgery, your vision can be adjusted using UV light. It gives amazing results, but it’s also the most costly option and requires additional visits following surgery to customize the vision.

Cost Transparency: What You’ll Pay

At Clear Vision Center, we believe in being upfront about costs. Here’s how it works:

  • Eyhance IOL upgrade: We offer this for a clear, flat fee that includes the lens, surgery, and all follow-up care. It’s less than other premium lenses like the Light-adjustable lens or MFIOL. For qualified borrowers, we offer 0% financing for around $116/mo on the Eyhance lens. We will provide a detailed quote at your consultation, after we’ve determined if you are a candidate.
  • No hidden fees: You won’t be surprised by extra charges.
  • Flexible options: We’ll explain all the choices clearly, and you can decide what fits your needs and budget.

Some practices push patients toward the most expensive lens. We won’t do that at Clear Vision Center. Our goal is to give you freedom from glasses and contacts, and get you the option that makes sense for you and your unique characteristics.

Is Eyhance Right for You?

Eyhance is a great choice if:

  • You want crisp, clear distance vision
  • You’d like a little extra help with everyday tasks like reading a phone or menu
  • You have astigmatism and want it corrected during your cataract surgery
  • You want fewer night vision problems than a MFIOL
  • You have a more limited budget for cataract surgery, but still want an upgraded lens.
  • You trust the best cataract surgeon in Rochester Hills to guide you

However, if you read a lot, do close-up work, or simply want the best near vision possible, you might still consider an MFIOL or Light-adjustable lens. We’ll go over everything with you during your consultation, and let you know if you are a candidate.
