Which Laser Vision Correction Procedure Has the Quickest Recovery?
Posted by: Clear Vision Cataract & LASIK Center

When you’re ready to ditch your glasses or contacts, recovery time matters. Here’s how healing compares between SMILE, LASIK, and PRK—from someone who’s helped thousands of patients get back to clear vision faster.
Choosing the Right Procedure Starts With Recovery
One of the first questions I hear from patients considering vision correction is,
“How long will I be down?”
It’s a great question—and one I love answering, because recovery time is often shorter and more comfortable than most people expect.
At Clear Vision Center, we offer several advanced procedures: LASIK, PRK, and SMILE. All three can deliver outstanding visual results, but the healing experience is a little different for each. Let’s walk through what you can realistically expect after surgery so you can plan with confidence.
LASIK: The Gold Standard for Fast Recovery
For most people, LASIK is still the quickest route back to clear vision.
During LASIK, I create a thin flap on the surface of the cornea using a femtosecond laser. Then, a second laser reshapes the underlying tissue to correct your prescription. The flap is repositioned—and your eye starts healing immediately.
What recovery feels like:
- Day 0 – Surgery day: You’ll rest your eyes for a few hours after surgery. Expect mild irritation or watering, similar to an eyelash in your eye.
- Day 1: Most patients wake up seeing dramatically better. You can usually drive, work, or return to most normal activities within 24 hours.
- First week: Vision continues to sharpen; dryness is common but manageable with artificial tears.
- 1 month+: Vision typically stabilizes fully by one month.
Comfort level: Mild. Most patients describe the procedure as pressure rather than pain.
Return-to-life timeline: Usually within a day or two, making LASIK the clear winner for speed.
SMILE: Gentle, Minimally Invasive—and Nearly as Fast
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the newest evolution in laser vision correction. Instead of creating a flap, I use a femtosecond laser to create a tiny, contact-lens-shaped piece of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea, which is removed through a small incision—about 4 mm wide.
Because there’s no surface flap, the cornea remains more stable and the surface nerves heal faster, reducing dryness for many patients.
What recovery feels like:
- Day 0: Your eye may feel scratchy or watery for a few hours.
- Day 1: Vision clears enough to resume most daily tasks, though some patients notice a slight haze for 24–48 hours.
- First week: Vision continues improving steadily; dryness is typically less noticeable than with LASIK.
- 2 weeks + : Most people reach crisp, stable vision by two weeks.
Comfort level: Very mild. Because SMILE doesn’t involve a flap, the eye heals quietly and comfortably.
Return-to-life timeline: Usually 24–48 hours. Slightly slower than LASIK on average, but many patients prefer SMILE’s comfort and lower dryness risk.
PRK: The Original Laser Procedure With a Slower Start
Before LASIK existed, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) was the first form of laser vision correction—and it’s still an excellent option today, especially for patients with thin corneas or certain occupations where flap safety matters (military, contact sports, etc.).
Instead of creating a flap, PRK gently removes the surface layer of cells (the epithelium) before reshaping the cornea. Those surface cells regenerate over the next few days.
What recovery feels like:
- Days 1–3: Expect moderate discomfort—burning, tearing, or a “foreign-body” feeling—as the surface heals. I place a clear contact-lens bandage to protect the eye during this period.
- Days 4–5: The bandage lens is removed once the new surface cells have regrown.
- Week 1–2: Vision improves daily, but may fluctuate between clear and hazy.
- 1 month + : Final visual clarity arrives between 3–4 weeks as the cornea smooths.
Comfort level: Moderate for the first few days; then mild.
Return-to-life timeline: About 5–7 days before most patients feel ready to return to normal routines.
At-a-Glance Recovery Comparison
Procedure | Discomfort | Functional Vision | Full Recovery | Dryness Risk |
---|---|---|---|---|
LASIK | Mild (4–6 hrs) | 1 day | 1–2 weeks | Mild–Moderate |
SMILE | Very mild | 1–2 days | 1–2 weeks | Low |
PRK | Moderate (3–4 days) | 5–7 days | 3–4 weeks | Low |
Which One Heals the Fastest?
If your priority is getting back to work or activities as quickly as possible, LASIK usually offers the fastest visual recovery.
If you want a gentler procedure with minimal dryness and don’t mind an extra day of haze, SMILE may be the best fit.
And if your corneas are thinner, or you’re in a profession that benefits from a no-flap approach, PRK remains a safe, effective option—you’ll just need a little more patience during the first week.
Tips to Speed Up Healing—No Matter Which You Choose
Here’s what I tell every patient after laser vision correction:
- Rest your eyes the first day; let them heal without screens.
- Use your drops exactly as prescribed. They control inflammation and prevent dryness.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes for at least a week (longer for LASIK).
- Protect your eyes from dust, sweat, and makeup until we clear you.
- Stay hydrated—it helps your tear film recover faster.
Most importantly, follow your post-op instructions closely and come to your follow-ups. That’s how we make sure your recovery is on track and your results stay crystal clear.
