Imagine fine-tuning your vision after cataract surgery. With the Light Adjustable Lens, that’s exactly what we can do — bringing personalization and precision to a whole new level of sight.

What Is the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)?

When I perform cataract surgery, one of the most important steps is selecting the right lens implant. Until recently, that decision had to be made before surgery—based on careful measurements, experience, and your lifestyle goals.

But the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), developed by RxSight, completely changes that. It’s the first and only intraocular lens (IOL) that allows me to customize your vision after surgery using light-based adjustments.

That means we can literally “fine-tune” your prescription once your eye has healed—giving you clearer, sharper vision that’s truly personalized.

How It Works: Light Meets Precision

Here’s how it works:
After your cataract is removed, I implant the Light Adjustable Lens just like a standard lens. Once your eye heals (usually after about 2–3 weeks), you come back to the office for a few quick, painless light treatments.

Each treatment takes only a few minutes. During the session, we use a UV light delivery device to adjust the lens’ shape on a microscopic level, changing how it focuses light inside your eye.

Between treatments, you get to experience your vision in real life—reading, driving, watching TV—and tell me how things look. Then, I can make further refinements based on your feedback.

After the final adjustment, we lock in your vision permanently with one last light treatment.

Why Patients Love It

What my patients love most about the Light Adjustable Lens is the control it gives them.

Before, we had to make the best prediction possible—and while outcomes were excellent, there was always a little variability. With the LAL, you get to try your vision before we finalize it.

Some patients prefer crisp distance vision and don’t mind reading glasses. Others want a blend that allows them to see both near and far without glasses. The Light Adjustable Lens makes both possible—and customizable.

Who’s a Good Candidate for the LAL?

You might be a good candidate if:

  • You’re planning cataract surgery and want the most personalized visual result possible.
  • You’ve had previous refractive surgery (like LASIK or PRK) and want the best way to “fine-tune” your outcome.
  • You’re motivated to achieve glasses-free vision for most activities.

It’s also ideal for patients who are perfectionists about their vision—those who notice the smallest details and want the clearest, most customized result.

The Light Adjustable Lens vs. Other Premium Lenses

There are many advanced lens options available today, including multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses. Each has unique benefits, and I take time with every patient to match the technology to their lifestyle.

The Adjustment Process Step-by-Step

Here’s what the typical journey looks like:

  1. Surgery Day: I remove your cataract and implant the Light Adjustable Lens — a quick, comfortable outpatient procedure.
  2. Healing Period: You’ll wear UV-blocking glasses and allow your eye to heal (about 2–3 weeks).
  3. Light Treatments: We perform 2–4 adjustment sessions in the office. Each lasts only a few minutes.
  4. Lock-In: Once you’re happy with your vision, we finalize the result with a final light treatment.
  5. Enjoy Your Vision: You’ll be able to enjoy sharper, clearer sight — truly tailored to you.

Throughout the process, you’re in control. You see how your vision looks at each step, and we make refinements together.

Safety and Proven Results

The Light Adjustable Lens has been approved by the FDA and studied extensively in clinical trials. Patients who received the LAL were twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses compared to those with standard lenses.

It’s safe, precise, and one of the most exciting advancements I’ve seen in cataract surgery in my career.
