During the summer, we tend to ignore most problems because we are too busy with vacations, kids, and grandkids (especially in Michigan when the perfect weather hits!). And then around late August, it all comes creeping back in. The long to-do list that got longer than a great shopping trip receipt. The eye doctor appointment you keep meaning to book “once things calm down.” If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and we’re also here to tell you… it’s not too late. End of summer is actually one of the best times of year to start exploring vision correction, whether that’s LASIK, EVO ICL, refractive lens exchange, or cataract surgery.

Here’s why the timing works, and which procedure might be worth asking about.

Why Late Summer Is a Smart Time to Start

The slower stretch before fall. Kids are heading back to school, schedules are about to fill up with fall sports, work calendars, and holiday planning. Before all of that hits, it is often the calmest window most people get until next summer. A consultation takes less than an hour, and most procedures have you back to normal activities within days.

You still have time to use this year’s benefits. If you have an FSA or HSA, funds you set aside this year don’t roll over indefinitely. Starting the process now means you’re not scrambling in December trying to use it or lose it.

You’ve just lived through the season that shows you exactly what’s wrong. Nothing exposes vision problems like summer does. Think: the glare off the lake, squinting through a windshield at golden hour, contacts drying out on a boat or from the AC, cataract halos around lights in a summer night drive. Whatever bothered you this summer is useful information for your consultation. (Hint: write those down!).

If you’re in the Rochester, Troy, Bloomfield Hills, or greater Metro Detroit area, here’s a quick rundown of the three most common paths patients ask us about this time of year.

LASIK: For Nearsighted, Farsighted, or Astigmatism Correction

If you’ve thought about vision correction surgery, LASIK is likely the first thing you’ve heard of. It’s one of the most common brands that people know about. It’s a quick, in-office procedure with decades of safety data behind it, and most patients notice dramatically improved vision within a day. If you’ve spent this summer swapping between glasses and contacts at the pool, the golf course, or a concert, and are kind of over it, LASIK might be worth a conversation.

EVO ICL: For Higher Prescriptions or Thin Corneas

Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK, and that’s exactly why EVO ICL exists. If you have a stronger prescription, thinner corneas, or you’ve been told in the past that you “can’t” get LASIK, EVO ICL is a great alternative. Instead of reshaping the cornea, a small lens is placed inside the eye to work alongside your natural one. It’s removable, it’s precise, and it’s helped many higher-prescription patients in our Rochester and Bloomfield Hills offices finally ditch the contacts they thought they would be in forever. Yes, even the ones that were told they could not get LASIK.

RLE: For Presbyopia or Early Lens Changes

If you’re around 45 or older and find yourself pulling things away from your face to read them, Refractive Lens Exchange might be worth asking about. RLE works similarly to cataract surgery, but your natural lens is replaced with an artificial one, called an Intraocular Lens (IOL). It’s done proactively, before a cataract has fully formed, specifically to correct presbyopia or long-standing nearsightedness and farsightedness. It can be a great option for patients who aren’t candidates for LASIK or EVO ICL because of age-related lens changes, but still want to be done with glasses and readers.

Cataract Surgery: For Cloudy, Hazy, or Glare-Heavy Vision

Cataracts don’t happen overnight, which is exactly why so many people wait too long to do anything about them. Some people put this off for YEARS before doing anything about it. If this summer’s sunsets looked duller than you remembered, nighttime driving felt harder because of halos around headlights, or colors just seemed a little washed out, it may be time to have your eyes checked for cataracts. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest procedures performed today, and it’s not just about clearer vision; it’s about getting back the parts of life cataracts have quietly been dimming. The great news is, during that surgery, we can also improve your vision, and that’s something most of our patients are thrilled about.
